Today, I had a big server upgrade. I’m a programmer, not a server admin, but somehow, I was put in charge of the upgrade. I rehearsed the tasks repeatedly, and found all sorts of stumbling blocks, problems, and things I didn’t really understand.
We budgeted a 12 hour outage window, with the hope that it would be only six- the process started at 11AM, and we hoped to be done by 5PM.
Well, proper preparation mean proper execution. The actual install was finished by 1:30PM. I spent a half hour verifying its success, and then another half hour fixing my one mistake, and called it done.
The only outstanding problem? A client patch that was supposed to go out, and didn’t (at least, didn’t properly). And that part wasn’t inside my ambit. So everything I did went off without any notable hitches.
And that makes for a good day.
