The building you see in front of the cathedral is the Highland Building. That building ranks as one of my favorite tragedies in Pittsburgh. First, it’s one of the only skyscrapers on the East End, which alone is enough to make it distinctive. Built in a bygone era, the upper levels of the facade are decorated with all sorts of details to break up the otherwise austere whiteness of the whole thing. And it is white- it shines when the sun hits it with blinding brilliance.
Today, however, it simply sits and molders. I have no idea how long it’s been vacant. A view from street level shows the ravages of time. It sits in the heart of a neighborhood just starting to recover from having absolutely no economy. It’s a sad place to see, but the building bears its scars with pride. It’s a little bit of beautiful decay in the residential sections of Pittsburgh.
